Chapter Twelve

Colin took her hand in his and bowed his head. “Almighty Father, we praise this day you have given us and the beautiful countryside. Allow everything we do to glorify you and your plans. Bless our journey and give Nikki and me strength to persevere so that others may have shelter over their heads….”

Nikki listened while Colin asked God to come into their presence because the two of them were gathered in His name. Silently, she added her own request that she would find the peace and joy that He had given Colin. She missed the end of Colin’s prayer, hearing him say only, “Amen.”

He let go of her hand and climbed back over the boulder, offering her assistance.

“I’m fine, thanks.” She looked at her watch. They had just enough time to make another bathroom break and add a Windbreaker to her layers before she needed to check in with Gary. He’d hinted that there could be a break in the fight over the land. “So what did you decide we should ride today?”

“The majority of it is downhill, so I thought we could get the tricycle out of the way. What do you think?”

Colin and Jared had done most of the research and planning for the relay. She wasn’t about to interfere with their work. “I’m with you all the way, just let me know what I need to do.”

She followed him back to camp, where Jared and Sandra had the equipment ready and waiting.

Nikki went into the motor home, called Gary, grabbed her jacket and went to the refrigerator to get a bottle of sports drink. Everything was warm. She set it back and put the Windbreaker on, meeting the crew outside. “Did you know the refrigerator isn’t working?”

Jared produced two bottles of cold drink from the ice chest. “Yeah, we noticed. I’ve called the dealer and they gave us some suggestions. If we can’t find the problem, we’ll have it checked out in Pueblo. We’ll work on that while you two start down the mountain. Go on to the top of the pass and we’ll meet you on the north side of Walsenburg. Cell phones…”

Colin looked at his. “Have service.”

“Water?”

Colin looked at both tricycles, raising his backpack from the platform between the back tires. “Check.”

Sandra tugged on Jared’s arm. “You’ve checked everything else there is to check. Get going and good luck,” she said impatiently.

Nikki looked at Colin with the tricycle and laughed. “I need a picture of this.” She pulled out the digital camera Grandfather had given her and waited for Colin to climb on.

“I think you’re supposed to be in the photo as well, aren’t you?” Sandra reached for the camera.

Nikki and Colin wheeled up side by side and smiled while Sandra snapped a picture in front of the Back on Track banner. She examined it on the screen and gave them the thumbs-up. “You’re off…”

“Like a herd of turtles.” Nikki put her feet on the pedals and struggled to get her knees out of the way while Colin moved along toward the exit to the campground with his feet on the ground.
